Homemade Tortilla Chips



Chef Jason Hill of http://www.CookingSessions.com shows how to make homemade tortilla chips in this episode of “Chef Tips.” This recipe for homemade tortilla chips uses white corn tortillas, canola oil and a bit of fresh lime and salt. When making homemade tortilla chips you can also heat a large pot of oil and heat it to 375 F, but I prefer using a mini deep fryer . Hope you enjoy my homemade tortilla chips recipe!

  1. I buy a bag of tostitos chips and then I open up the bag and put them in a bowl. Then I blow hot air from my hair dryer over them for 45-55 seconds. Mmmmm nice and fresh! Nothing like homemade!

  2. I searched how to make home made tortilla chips, and I found what I was looking for. Sooo unless you guys were planning to make things from scratch then props to you.

  3. Just look at all the different comments, Mexican food is ancient and their secrets are passed from generation to generation. Good video chef but not quite complete is better to use tortillas that have been dried for at least a few hours.

  7. Was looking for a more intricate recipe haha these are the super basics. But I’m assuming you knew that. And then most people’s response is that you can’t do anymore but you are so wrong lol

There is only one thing I would fault you for in this video, and it is easily remedied: I would have made sure the oil level was up to the 'Max' level mark on the fryer, to ensure all the tortillas added to the basket were completed covered when the basket was lowered into the oil! I have a similar Waring deep fryer, and I typically load-up the basket way more than you, and all the food (in my case, wings) are completely covered with hot oil. Then, there is minimal need to disturb the food that is deep-frying / cooking. I'm sorry, but you messed with the frying chips way to much, likely resulting in a number of broken chips. You messed with the chips almost constantly while frying them, when all you truly needed to do was touch them once or twice with a spoon (or similar utensil), to make sure they did not stick together. I really liked the addition of lime at the end! This recipe makes simple, fast, and delicious chips in minutes. It doesn't get much easier than this! For those of you who rail on Chef Jason because he did not make his own, fresh tortillas, to deep fry: cut the rest of us a break! You will NEVER convince me that you can make better tortillas than those I buy at the store, or that your "home made tortillas" will result in better tortilla chips than Chef Jason's! I would challenge ANY of you to make tortilla chips with your "home made tortillas", and put them in a blind taste test with those Chef Jason makes using store bought tortillas. I guarantee you, most people would not be able to tell the difference!

  9. These ARE home made tortilla chips! Just because he didn't make the tortillas himself doesn't mean these are not "home made" tortilla chips. Tortillas are easy to make, but take time. And I would challenge any of the critics on here to make tortillas from scratch, that are better than the ones you can buy at the store! If there would be ANY difference between your fresh tortillas, and store bought ones, MOST PEOPLE WOULD NOT KNOW THE DIFFERENCE!!! What? Are you a tortilla snob of some sort? The important thing here is that the tortillas a freshly deep-fried, seasoned, and served warm. Delicious!

  12. First time I found this video, I was annoyed, because I wanted to make it totally from scratch. I did not have tortillas in my fridge.

    That being said, I totally did this tonight and it was really good. I will be doing this for a long time.

  13. A lot of bitching as to how these aren't homemade tortilla chips. How does everyone know if those tortillas were homemade or not? Or even if this is his home? He makes tortilla chips from tortillas, and I wanted to see the magic take place. Done. Geez. Everyone is a lawyer here.

  14. Did he say he made the tortillas ? NO , Homemade chips , tortilla shells are not chips ,cutting them up and frying them turns them into chips ,so yes homemade chips .
